A Research Technician At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer...
Since previously applying, I have continued working as a research technician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. I examine the epigenetic changes that often occur in the progression of cancers. Using techniques such as Chromatin Immunoprecipitation and Assays for Transposase Accessible Chromatin follow by high throughput sequencing (ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq) , I focused on alterations in histone modifications and changes in chromatin accessibility. Since I collaborated with other investigators, I was able to study a variety of different cancer types including breast cancer, gliomas, various leukemias and prostate cancer. I work with mouse models as well as actual patient samples. Some of members of my lab are physician-scientists, and I have shadow ed them when they see patients at the hospital. Since all of the physicians I previously shadowed were specialists, I have reached out to a family doctor. I will be shadowing him on weekends in the coming months so I can gain a better understanding of what being a primary care provider entails. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t knowâ⬠I can still distinctly recall my eleven-year-old self repeatedly saying to anyone who approached me It was my first day of school in America and that was the only sentence I could put together in English. I was born in China and lived there until my mother moved to New York. When my new classmates attempted to talk me, I can see their mouth moving but they might as well be speaking gibberish. I soon picked out words that I recognize when spoken to, but I still couldnââ¬â¢t comprehend, much less carry on, a whole conversation. I would spend hours watching television so I would listen to English even when I am at home. At first, I can only make sense of childrenââ¬â¢s programs and cartoons.
